WHAT DOES A PHYSICAL THERAPIST DO?

A pediatric physical therapist helps children master their gross motor skills.  They may work on gait training, range of motion, heat or ice treatments, electrical stimulation or neurodevelopmental exercises.   They also order durable medical equipment for children. They typically measure children for specialized seating.

What does an occupational therapist do?
 
A pediatric occupational therapist helps children master their fine motor and feeding skills. They may work on handwriting, upper extremity strengthening and range of motion, activities of daily living, and neurodevelopmental exercises.  They typically are the therapists that do therapeutic listening, interactive metronome, sensory integration, and oral motor stimulation.
What do speech and language pathologists do?
 
A pediatric speech and language pathologist work with children who have expressive and/ or receptive language delays.  They may work on oral motor exercises also.  They also help children with there augmentative communication.

I have worked in Pediatrics since 1987 at Children's Hospital of Michigan, U of M Mott Hospital Holly, Huron Valley and Walled Lake Schools. Opened Kids In Motion Pediatric Therapy Services in 1990.

Background: Kathy graduated in 1981 from The Ohio State University. She has been a pediatric physical therapist for 21 years.  She has experience in both a clinic and school setting.  She is currently contracted to the Huron Valley school system and works in the early intervention and pre-school program.
She is NDT trained and have taken multiple courses in cranial sacral therapy. She also has experience in seating and mobility.

Background: I am a registered occupational Therapist who graduated from Eastern Michigan University in December of 1992. I have been practicing for ten years with over eight years of experience with the pediatric population. My experience includes Pediatric Outpatient Head Injury Pediatrics, School Practice / Intervention, Pediatric home care and Vocational Rehabilitation. My areas of specialization includes Vision Rehab, Oral Motor Therapy, Sensory Processing (integration), Therapeutic Listening, Quality of Movement. I am working towards Certification in SIPT Training. With completion scheduled for April 2003. I also completed Cranial Therapy One and Two with continued training planned.

I integrate these pediatric approaches and training to promote successfully outcomes in the school, home, and community. My professional goal is to continue other areas of specialization to assure quality service for the kids I evaluate and treat.

Background: She graduated in 1994 from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor degree.  She started working at Hurley Rehabilitation Center for the pediatric inpatient/outpatient department.  Then in 2000 she joined Kids In Motion Pediatric Therapy Services where she services kids in the early intervention and preschool programs in the Huron Valley school district.  She also works at Kids In Motion's out patient clinic.  Her areas of interest include sensory integration with a certification in Therapeutic Listening, seating and mobility, and aquatics.  She is married with a 6 month old boy. Leisure interests include swimming, exercising, golfing, and camping.
